It’s as simple as reaching out to play with that rusting camera in your house. That’s what Kaushal Grandhi, now a junior at Cupertino High School, did starting just last year. Now, photography plays a major role in his weekly activities.

“I really like photography, and it’s just an activity that people can get into really easily — you don’t need an expensive camera,” Kaushal said. “You can use your phone, as it just comes down to practicing capturing the moments around you.”

Behind barrier cables, Kaushal snaps a shot of the Porsche 911 GT3R. This photo was taken at the parking lot in San Jose City College.

Before venturing into photography though, Kaushal was already a car fanatic. He loved having the opportunity to look into the slick interior designs of his dream cars in-person. Thinking of how he could incorporate and share his love for the aesthetic of cars, he began photographing them.

“The Porsche 911 GT3R was the car that inspired me to have cars as the subject of my photographs. There were details in this car such as the sleek interior and the wing that I really wanted to capture.”

Since, he’s spent his weekends visiting occasional events held by Dave Car Meets, or even partnering with local dealerships like Alfa Romeo to have more opportunities to photograph. Eventually, after hours of editing (and filtering through the hundreds of pictures), his favorite few go live on his instagram page, which has garnered 6 thousand views just last month.

Hoping to turn his hobby into a small business, he’s since freelanced and opened up requests and commissions. Though it was an activity that turned into an unexpected passion, he maintains that it’s more than a hobby — it’s an activity he’s trying to turn into a side hustle.

“It all started with helping dealerships gain more exposure. As my page started gain more followers and exposure, I thought I might be able to make money doing something that I love.“
